ONE BILLION PEOPLE IN THE WORLD NEED YOUR OLD EYEGLASSES—DONATE THEM NOW!!!
What: Drop off your used eyeglasses at KUUF June 10-24.
Where: Look for a basket with an eyeglass-wearing owl sign in the Sanctuary lobby. Put your used eyeglasses that you will never wear again in the basket.
Who: Sponsored by the KUUF Social Justice Committee; coordinated by Ellen Newberg.
Why: A recent Seattle Times article (May 5, 2018) reported that one billion or more people in the world desperately need eyeglasses. For example:
- 200,000 traffic deaths per year in India are tied to poor vision.
- Middle-aged coffee farmers in Bolivia whose inability to see objects up close find it difficult to spot ripe beans to harvest.
- Nearsighted children are written off as slow learners just because they can’t see.
- As people age and become farsighted, they can no longer do their work if they need to see objects or text up close, e.g., meter readers.
The Social Justice Committee has authorized Ellen Newberg to collect used prescription eyeglasses, reading glasses, and prescription sunglasses. Ellen will deliver them to a Lions Club representative. The Lions Club sends delegations to developing countries with the glasses and a person trained to administer eye tests. Once people are tested, they are provided with the pair of eyeglasses available that most closely matches their needs. Please consider giving the gift of vision to another person.
Our Goal: to collect 100 pairs of used eyeglasses by Sunday, June 24.
