Our discussion panel will include Jose (first language Spanish), Silveria (first language Mam), Suzanne & Phil (first language English). All 4 speak Spanish as a common language for translation purposes between panel members or with the audience.
The panel met last night and decided that it was best to have short discussion after Act I – Guatemala, Act II Mexico and then Act III USA. Some people don’t like to interrupt a movie that way, but there are 3 distinct parts to this powerful and poetic film. We decided to go with that format.
Feel free to invite any Mexican or Guatemalan friends with the confidence that they can participate. Act I of the movie is entirely in Spanish and Quiche, but there are English subtitles throughout the film.
For those who grew up with English in the USA, the movie offers a powerful, immersion experience in “point of view.” You see and experience first Guatemala, then Mexico, then the USA from another cultural and economic point of view. When you are an immigrant house waiter or domestic worker without documents, the United States and its citizens look somewhat different.
