Rev. Dr. Barry Andrews presents The Arc of the Moral Universe
This was a phrase Martin Luther King, Jr. used during the Civil Rights Era and made popular again by President Obama, who had it woven into the rug in the Oval Office. The phrase comes from Theodore Parker, who was a Unitarian minister, Transcendentalist, and radical abolitionist. He was called “the best hated man in America.” As we celebrate the life and legacy of MLK, let’s also remember Parker’s role in bending the arc of the moral universe.
Rev. Dr. Barry Andrews is Minister Emeritus of the UU Congregation at Shelter Rock on Long Island. He and his wife, Linda, are now living on Bainbridge Island. He is the author of several books on Transcendentalism and Transcendentalist authors, most recently American Sage: The Spiritual Teachings of Ralph Waldo Emerson (U. Mass. Press) and Transcendentalism Yesterday and Today: Sermons and Addresses on Transcendentalist Themes (Xlibris).
