When Abraham Lincoln delivered his first inaugural address Mar. 2, 1861, he knew the nation was facing dark times, but he called people back to the lofty assertion set forth in the Declaration of Independence – that all are created equal and “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among there are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” Today, we too, as people of faith, are called to respond to uncertainty and challenges in the world with the better angels of our nature.
