Wheel of Life: Don Tarbutton

Don Tarbutton,

March 24, 2025

On Monday March 24th, 2025 Don Tarbutton’s wish for a peaceful passing supported came true. He was supported in this passing by the Bainbridge Island Senior Center Queer Elders Family Group which he helped found and Kaiser Hospice.

Don fully lived his 88 1/2 years and looked forward to reuniting with his soul partner, Steve Glancy, who preceded him in 1995 when Don was the Executive Director of Hospice of Kitsap County.

Don especially loved visiting Lake Quinalt. He loved the land, trails and lodge to the roots of his being for many reasons. Most of all was the 15 years, which he shared there with his one true soul partner, Steve Glancy (a Seattle attorney focused on LGBTQ+ civil rights laws). It was often at Christmas time that they enjoyed it most.

Don was a longtime UU, since first visiting a congregation in Portland in 1995. Friends encouraged him to go. When he saw a pamphlet welcoming queer people into the church, he knew he wanted to be a part of it. Don was impressed by our diversity and how open UU congregations are to whoever needs our values. Don was a member of KUUF for the past five years and treasured the fellowship and social justice emphasis of the congregation.

He said that he wanted to be remembered for having lived a meaningful life because of being a gay man, not in spite of it.

Don shared this encouragement, shortly before his death:

“When you grow up different, it makes life harder to live. It’s good to see other queer people in prominent positions and activities in the church now. So, keep up the good work!”

He left a bequest to help KUUF continue to be a beacon of light for how life might be for all people. His longtime friend Rick Freeman notes, “I’m sure his heart and love remain united with all of yours.”

Don requested not to have a formal memorial service. Rick will be placing his ashes at the Hillside Cemetery on Bainbridge Island and at Lake Quinalt.
